Blanche is on the way!

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

I’ve talked about my spinning wheel, Rose, and I have to say I love this wheel. She spins like a dream, has a wide range of ratios (which determine how thick or thin a yarn ends up), and is easy to transport. I’ve only had one problem with it in the year-plus that I’ve owned [...]

Put the treadle to the metal…

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Yesterday, Edie and I met at her house to try to get her spinning wheel up and running.  A friend of hers loaned it to her, and before she invests in her own, she wanted to be sure that spinning on a wheel was what she wanted to do.  She’s already an accomplished spindler, but [...]

My spinning wheel wears slippers

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

With the record heat we’ve been having, I haven’t been spinning, since it’s too hot to spin with socks on, and I won’t put my bare feet on the treadles. While zipping around Ravelry, I found a thread where a poster described making treadle covers for her Majacraft Rose from a lambswool car-washing mitt. TA-DA! [...]

The wool combs are here!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Ooooh-gotta love a spinning tool which Jack Bauer would love… This is my first combed roving-not bad for a first try: I doubted that it would be as easy as just pulling the fiber off the combs and through the diz (the hole in the diz is SO small!), but it was! First impressions? The [...]

The fleece is done…

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Saturday was fleece day – hot, sunny & relatively dry. Here’s one before washing: And, into the wash! 2 batches going at once: 2 washes, 3 rinses and a few hours of drying time later, it’s soft, fluffy & smells clean and just slightly sheepy.  I didn’t bother trying to preserve the lock structure – [...]

Weekend Plan

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Here’s the plan… With temperatures forecast in the 80′s, it should be ideal fleece-drying weather. I’ve got 2 shallow under-bed storage boxes which will be my wash/rinse tubs. I’m thinking of connecting the garden hose through the basement window to the hot water supply for the washing machine, so I won’t have to lug heavy [...]

Must-Have Cardigan progress…

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Ok!  Sleeves are finished, shoulder seams sewn up, and one sleeve attached. In other news, the fleece is still soaking.  It’s been so cold here, that by the time I get home, there’s no way I’m going to deal with it.  Tomorrow calls for the mid 60s, with 70s on Friday and 80 on Saturday. [...]

More CS&W…

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Oh!  The CS&W had a vendor selling the cutest bags: And, a sample-size niddy-noddy (which matches the full-size one I have): And, the only thing (besides the fleece) that I wanted to get – hand cards: Technorati Tags: Knitting!, Spinning

Fleece cleaning…

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

I spent last night going through the posts on Ravelry describing fleece cleaning. The suggestions range from hot water in the sink or tub with detergent, to leaving the fleece soaking in rain water for a week. This method sounded promising until I read that it’s supposed to smell like a backed-up septic system if [...]
